First, this is not a book about Greece, though that is how the author, a commentator for Bloomberg and part-time thriller writer, initially pitched it. Indeed, Matthew Lynn’s contacts in and knowledge of Frankfurt and Berlin are far better than those in Athens, which seems as impenetrable to him as to most western journalists. No mention here of the anomalous position of the Greek shipowners (they don’t pay tax); no mention of the notorious Article 86 (I think) of the constitution, which gives MPs complete legal immunity – and hence fosters a culture of entrenched corruption.
